Sydney Car Loans Blog: The Cheapest Cars to Own and Run in Australia

Here in our Rockdale Car Loans office, our clients often ask us what the cheapest cars are to own and run in Australia. It’s an interesting topic because often, the best selling cars are not that cheap to run. Smaller cars are generally more fuel efficient, more affordable and cheaper to service.

One of our favourites is the Suzuki Alto hatchback. For the third year in a row, the Suzuki Alto hatchback has topped the Australian Automobile Association’s running costs survey. Reports show that the Suzuki Alto costs $120 a week to run or $6327 a year. These figures take into account purchase price, loan repayments interest, registration, fuel consumption, servicing costs, depreciation and insurance.

On the other end of the scale are the Nissan Patrol and Toyota LandCruiser. They cost more than $400 a week to run or $21000 a year.

You can purchase a Suzuki Alto from just $11,990 and be aware it is more expensive in Queensland. Compared to $12,990 drive-away in other states, it is $13,990 drive-away in Queensland because it is sold through an independent distributor there.

For those curious about whether hybrid cars save money, the Toyota Prius hybrid costs $196 a week to run or $10,216 per year and the Honda Civic hybrid costs $206 per week or $10,333 per year.
